The place where the museum is located is ancient. Here, on a sandy ridge between two lakes, people have settled since ancient times, and the ancient village of Lunkino has been located for the last few centuries. In 1997, V.P. Groshev, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, president of the Academy of Management and Market (1940-2009), who was in love with the local places and the quiet Meshcherskaya nature, decided to organize an Interregional school of craftsmen in Lunkino, where young people could master local meshchersk crafts. And since the main decorative material in this forest region has always been wood, the students and their mentors primarily worked with it. Soon the first handicrafts appeared, which formed the basis of the museum's current collection.
During the museum's operation, its collections have collected more than 3,500 exhibits, which represent the entire variety of styles of carving, wood painting, the art of weaving, various genres of painting and everyday life of the old Meshchera. About a third of the exhibits are works by students and graduates of the Interregional School of Craftsmen, participants in camps and seminars, and teachers and mentors.
The museum's exposition is presented in 15 halls, and in a spacious clearing around the museum there are many garden and park sculptures made at a highly artistic level. The museum is particularly proud of the magnificent works created by artisans from different regions of Russia. The exhibition also features works by foreign masters from mysterious Japan, sunny Spain, unexplored Thailand, native Belarus and many other countries.
